General Motors has invested $3.2 million in the Michigan-based Sakti3 development company, a start-up founded in 2007. The new automotive battery development company is planning to be in the auto business for the long term. The battery technology is intended to power cars for the future of the auto industry. In 2008 Sakti3 was designated a Michigan Center of Energy Excellence and the company was awarded $3 million to speed up its efforts to produce a prototype and to partner with the University of Michigan. An initial development agreement with General Motors included a development center called Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains designed to help General Motors develop next-generation batteries.

While General Motors has a lot of overhead and capacity, Sakti3 does not have the capacity to manufacture batteries on a large scale. In November 2010, General Motors will start selling the Chevrolet Volt, which is an electric vehicle with an extended range.
